Frosty Day Grizzly

As the Autumn frosts begin, the Grizzly bears continue to forage for food before hibernation time. This fellow is looking well for the upcoming winter.

Rocky Mountian Moose And Calf

A mother’s care is evident as they both feed and drink in their natural habitat.

Rocky Mountain Stare-down

This confident Ram decided he was going to try and stare me down. He is well on his way to becoming a dominant male Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep.

A Bird On The Hand, Is Worth Two…

Just a regular bunch of pigeons on a not-so regular bronze statue.

Fiesty Little Guy

Nothing runs past the alert eyes and ears of these efficient hunters. Short-Tailed Weasels, find prey and protection in the rocks and crags of the Canadian Rockies.  Comments welcome.

Mom!

It was fun to watch the interaction between this mother Grizzly and her cub. A male of the species wandered too close and there was quite a commotion! Comments welcome.

Snowshoe Hare-Bunny

This little guy decided he would do a Lindt chocolate bunny pose for me. Unlike rabbits, hares are born with fur and eyes open so they are developed early-on for survival in the wild. Comments welcome.

Hoary Marmot

This Hoary Marmot decided to hang out on his burrow for us. Some people call them Whistle Pigs as their call is ear deafening up close. Biggest north American Ground Squirrel and they grow up to 10kg. These guys were skittish, as there are Grizzlies around. Comments welcome.

Grizzly Creek

There are approximately 700 Grizzly Bears in Alberta. This summer I have been fortunate to view a few of the population. Comments welcome.

Eastern Kingbird

This Eastern Kingbird decided to hang out for me along the Bow River. I like their typical ruffed-up crown feathers. They have a relatively large range from South and… (more…)

Swainsons Hawk – Nature, Canada

This male Swainsons Hawk was “putting on the brakes” for landing. Birds of prey have exceptional precision and accuracy. Comments welcome.

Great Grey Owl-Perch

This female Great Grey Owl decided to take a break, as her mate continued hunting over a nearby grassy meadow. Comments welcome.

Rascals

Their look was like they had just been caught being mischievous. :) Twin brothers in Kananaskis Country.  Comments welcome.

Male Red-Wing

This male Red-Wing has his grasping technique mastered. Melanin produces the black, which fosters feather durability, and carotenoids produce the yellowish to bright red colors. Comments welcome.

Armour vs. Might

I found these guys in my front yard the other day. I grabbed the 100mm macro lens as they were so tiny and could easily sit together on a 5 cent piece. The outcome of this encounter was less dramatic… (more…)

Great Blue Heron

I grew-up in a north-central town in Alberta, Canada. The Great Blue Heron was and remains the town motto. Fantastic bird, and their annual migration ranges from northern parts of Canada to Mexico and the Caribbean. Comments Welcome.

Grazing Grizzly

Buddy John and I were out hiking one morning and came across this fellow. Got the heart pumping as we were on foot. Boar Grizzly, and at around 350+ lbs he will be bulking-up over the rest of the summer. Comments welcome.

Great Grey Owl-Talons

This Great Grey Owl was hunting mice/voles in a meadow near the mountains. In this attempt, he did not get his prey. Comments welcome.

Female Red-Wing

From a distance, the male Red-Wings are more striking, however once zoomed-in, I personally feel that the female is nicer looking bird.  There is a mutually benefical relationship between Red-Wings and Cattails… (more…)

Mallard Colors

Sometimes it’s easy to pass by these incredible ducks without a thought, just because they are common. As they mature, their tails point up more, so this drake has a few more good years left. :) Comments welcome.

Salamander!

This tiny little guy is a juvenile Long-Toed Salamander. He was only about 4.3 cm long. What an amazing treat it was to come across him, as they are rarely seen. As they grow and mature, they lose the yellow stripe/spots… (more…)

Landing!

Willets are known for their stiking wings flashes. This fellow decided to show them off for me during his landing.  Their breeding range covers parts of North and South Amerca, and are found near salt or fresh water. Comments welcome!

Take-off!

This male Black Capped Chickadee decided to hang around on the white spruce for a while. Then he decided to take off as I began capturing some of his head tilts and motions. I shot this at 1:1250 of a second, so we can see how… (more…)

Who Sees Whom

This decent sized guy was acting a little shy. It was a bit of a “who sees whom” game we he had going on. Also, I have embedded a Vimeo of a Cow Moose, that my friend Luke and I came across last spring. Luke was… (more…)

Leader Of The Pack

This little guy was marching his siblings to water, with even the parent Canada Geese in-tow. A young girl accidentally got a little too close to the goslings and one of the parents immediately postured up and hissed. The young girl fully… (more…)

Feels So Good

I got up early this morning and headed west of Calgary. Seeing if I could get some wildlife viewing opportunities on a few small ponds, that have just recently gone through the spring thaw. This little Muskrat was really… (more…)
